Luther Lands and Wondering Where Luther would Land

Every ten years the quaint village of Oberammergau, Germany, becomes the destination for Christian pilgrims from around the globe.  The performance of the Passion Play is the attraction and today Tammy and I travel with a group of Concordia’s friends to attend. Read the rest of this entry »

59th Annual CIT

What a weekend at CUW!  The 59th annual CIT was played in front of a huge, enthusiastic crowd.  Special kudos to the CUW Falcon men following their tournament championship.  A narrow 69-68 victory on Friday over Chicago was followed by an impressive 91-73 victory over Seward.  Congratulations, also, to the Seward women who defeated our Falcons in the women’s championship game.

Letters and Reactions to the Book Part 3

I am enjoying correspondence from the first readers of Faith in the Freshman.  Different people are finding different places to connect.  Here is the latest ~Pat

Dear Pat:

I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed reading your book, “FAITH in the FRESHMAN.”  As a proud member of the half century club as well as a father of two wonderful boys I could personally relate to your story. I laughed when you shared the fact that God blessed you with your five children over a seven-year span, with your wife unfortunately battling morning sickness throughout each pregnancy. My wife Terri was pregnant seven times over the first 9 years of our marriage, the joy of two boys and twin daughters and the incredible sadness of four miscarriages. She shared with Tammy the constant reminder of her physical state with 24/7 morning sickness from what seemed like conception through delivery. Read the rest of this entry »

5 Questions with Dr. Patrick Ferry – Ozaukee News Graphic

I recently sat down with reporters from the Ozaukee News Graphic to discuss topics including the book and the University.  The full article is embedded below.

Fall Presidential Forum at Concordia

imgp3478 Our blog is a wonderful opportunity to talk about a range of issues and themes that emerge in Faith in the Freshman.  In anticipation of that we have created categories for dialog and discussion.  One of these is titled “Concordia Conversations.”  Christian higher education is a big part of my book, and Concordia is a place where the story continues to unfold day after day.  Last night we had a good “Concordia Conversation” on campus!

Once a semester our Student Government Association sponsors a forum for me and other administrators on campus to interact with students.  Usually on a Monday night, SGA leaders were careful to avoid scheduling the forum on an evening when the Packers might be on TV.  They were obviously less concerned about avoiding a conflict with my beloved Denver Broncos who were en route to their sixth straight victory with a win over division rival San Diego.  That’s okay—I’d rather spend an evening with Concordia students any time! IRVINE – It’s the bottom of, let’s say, the 200th inning, and Concordia University freshman G.M. Ciallella cranks a pitch over the left field fence – also known as the school’s basketball gym – to tie the game 316-316.

Welcome to what’s billed as the world’s longest Wiffle Ball game, a 60-hour marathon that began on the college campus at midnight Friday, continued Saturday and was set to wrap up at noon today.

Partly a way to build campus spirit, the two-and-a-half-day ballgame was created as a fundraiser for diabetes. The dual motivations were on display as Ciallella took advantage of the opposing team’s inattention to dash home and score on a later play.

“Anything to win, anything to win,” hollered Ciallella, himself a diabetic. “I mean, it’s all about the cure. Sorry.” Read the rest of this entry »

Peter Ferry plays wiffle ball at Concordia University Irvine

Peter Ferry likes to play Wiffle ball, and he’ll be playing it at least once a year now while he’s studying at Irvine’s Concordia University.

Ferry, 19, a sophomore from Milwaukee, Wis., came up with the idea of trying to break the world record for longest Wiffle-ball game, to raise money for diabetes research, after Ferry’s dad, Patrick, said that he was the current record-holder, at 52 hours. Read the rest of this entry »
